Kerry's ceaseless diplomacy faces sternest test on Syria
Sun, 25 Sep 2016 08:04:54 -0400
By Lesley Wroughton NEW YORK (Reuters) - John Kerry had heard enough. After last week's bombing of a U.N. aid convoy in Syria dealt a death blow to a ceasefire deal in which he had invested all his diplomatic capital with Russia, the U.S. Secretary of State tossed aside a page of notes and looked at Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov across the horseshoe-shaped table in the U.N. Security Council. "I listened to my colleague from Russia, and I sort of felt a little bit like they're sort of in a parallel universe here," said a visibly angry Kerry, effectively calling Lavrov a liar for blaming the United States for spoiling the ceasefire.

Russian and Syrian jets bomb Aleppo camp retaken by rebels
Sun, 25 Sep 2016 07:41:37 -0400
Russian and Syrian forces bombed a strategic camp on the northern edge of Aleppo on Sunday after losing control of it overnight, both rebels and the Syrian army said. Rebels said the army used more powerful weapons in an attempt to recover Handarat, a Palestinian refugee camp a few kilometers north of the Aleppo which is on elevated ground overlooking one of the main roads into Aleppo that had been in rebel hands for years. The army which is being helped by Iranian-backed militias, Lebanon's Shi'ite Hezbollah militant group and a Palestinian militia, acknowledged rebels had retaken Handarat, whose capture on Saturday briefly marked the first major ground advance by the army in a new offensive to recapture rebel held Aleppo.

Battle rages near Aleppo, air onslaught continues
Sun, 25 Sep 2016 07:41:37 -0400
By Suleiman Al-Khalidi AMMAN (Reuters) - Warplanes bombed a strategic camp on the northern edge of Aleppo on Sunday as Syrian government and rebel forces battled for control of the high ground in a Russian-backed offensive that has left Washington's Syria policy in tatters. The United Nations Security Council is due to meet at 11 a.m. (1500 GMT) to discuss the fighting but the latest campaign for a decisive battlefield victory by President Bashar al-Assad and his Russian and Iranian allies appears to have buried any hope for diplomacy. In their first major ground advance of the offensive, the Syrian army and its militia allies seized control of the Handarat Palestinian refugee camp, a few kilometers north of Aleppo, only for rebels to counterattack a few hours later.

PM May rebuffed calls to play bigger role in EU referendum campaign
Sun, 25 Sep 2016 07:39:56 -0400
By Kylie MacLellan LIVERPOOL, England (Reuters) - Prime Minister Theresa May repeatedly failed to back her predecessor David Cameron in his fight to keep Britain in the European Union and hampered his attempts to rein in migration, according to extracts from two books about the referendum. May, who served as interior minister under Cameron and succeeded him as prime minister when he resigned after Britain's vote to leave the EU, backed staying in the bloc but was largely absent from the campaign. The two books come as May faces the complex task of leading negotiations over Britain's EU divorce, having divulged little on her intended strategy.

Syria rebels say peace talks futile while Russia backs Aleppo bombing
Sun, 25 Sep 2016 07:19:28 -0400
Syria's mainstream rebel groups said on Sunday the escalating Russian-backed bombing of besieged Aleppo had rendered any peace process futile unless there was an immediate halt to fighting and aid deliveries under United Nations auspices. In a statement signed by more than 30 rebel groups including the biggest faction backed by Turkey, Gulf states and the West, they said the bombing campaign that has killed dozens in the past few days was "unprecedented" and rendered futile the U.N.-backed political process Washington and Moscow seek to revive. The statement also said rebels could not accept "Russia as a sponsor because it was a partner with the regime in its crimes against our people," saying Russian-backed Syrian forces were using napalm and chemical weapons without censure by the international community.
